Medicine & Physiotherapy - GHANA
Our Medicine & Physiotherapy Project

Why Medicine & Physiotherapy Medicine & Physiotherapy in Ghana?

Home to Africa's friendliest and most welcoming people, Ghana is an intensely colourful land of dense forests, wild savannah and great beaches. Formerly called the "Gold Coast," Ghana is famous for its gold mines, rich fabrics and ancient social traditions. Mixed with a British colonial legacy and other more recent Western influences, Ghana has Africa's most open and exciting modern culture.

Our programmes are located in three regions, the hectic capital city of Accra, famous for Saturday nights full of good live music, the seaside town of Cape Coast, former centre of the African slave trade and home to several forts, and the semi-rural traditional Akuapem Hills.

Medical Volunteering in Ghana

Whether you are on your Gap Year or a medical student, you will have the chance to work in a wide range of departments in a busy Ghanaian hospital. You will see some conditions no longer common in economically more developed countries. All the hospitals in which we work are well equipped by local standards and provide an excellent backdrop for learning and improving your medical skills. There is also the opportunity for medical volunteers to work on an outreach programme going into local orphanages.

Why Volunteer in a Medical Placement?

The medical projects we organise provide our volunteers with an incredibly interesting and eye opening experience. They are able to observe how the medical process works in a developing country, and more than that, they are actively involved in it.

Those who are looking to study medicine at university will find that by shadowing doctors and watching medical procedures they will learn a great amount on a placement and gain experience that would simply not be possible in their home country. The project is also open to elective students and depending on their level of experience it may be possible to assist on a practical level.

The doctors and nurses with whom the volunteers work really enjoy the cultural exchange that is brought by the volunteers and are more than happy for you to be involved in most aspects of their work in the hospital. This placement should be used as a wonderful opportunity to question doctors who are very willing to share their expertise and knowledge.
